Why microsuction rather than syringing
Microsuction is the modern alternative to ear syringing. It uses gentle suction under direct vision, so the audiologist can see the ear canal throughout rather than flushing blind. Many GP surgeries no longer offer syringing at all. Your HomeSight audiologist decides on the day which method suits your ears, because the right choice depends on the type of wax, the shape of the canal and your ear health history.
Signs you may have earwax build-up
Muffled hearing that came on gradually. A blocked or full feeling in one ear. Earache without infection. Ringing in the ear. Itchiness. A hearing aid that whistles more than it used to. Wax is one of the most common reasons hearing seems to drop suddenly, and it is also one of the easiest to resolve.
What happens at the visit
- A conversation first. Your audiologist asks about your ears, any surgery or perforation, and what you have noticed.
- Otoscopy of both ears. They look inside before deciding on a method.
- Removal. Usually painless. You will hear the suction; most people describe it as loud rather than uncomfortable.
- A second look, and advice on keeping the ears clear.
If the ear is infected or the wax is too hard to remove safely that day, HomeSight will say so and tell you what to do next rather than pressing on.
